Microsoft and G42 AI Project Faces Scrutiny, National Security Concerns Arise. The $1 billion AI project between Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) and United Arab Emirates AI holding company G42 in Kenya is facing scrutiny due to national security concerns. Initially perceived as a potential model for extending the U.S.’s political and economic reach in the Global South, the partnership has sparked worries in Washington about its reliance on Microsoft, G42, and the Emirati government.
The core of the partnership involves Microsoft’s agreement to invest $1.5 billion in G42, contingent on G42 severing its ties with Chinese companies. Despite this condition, Pentagon officials remain skeptical about G42’s complete disengagement from China. Concerns have intensified due to cybersecurity lapses at Microsoft, raising fears of foreign powers gaining access to sensitive U.S. networks. Additionally, there are apprehensions about exporting advanced AI technology to Gulf states with questionable human rights records.
A significant issue is whether to approve shipments of Nvidia Corporation’s H100 chips, essential semiconductors for AI data centers, to the Middle East. The decision on this matter could have far-reaching implications for the G42-Microsoft deal and the U.S. administration’s efforts to position American companies at the forefront of AI development.
U.S. officials are eager to ensure that American firms, not Chinese counterparts, benefit from Gulf states’ aspirations to fund and develop major AI projects. This scrutiny comes amidst escalating tensions between the U.S. and China. Recently, U.S. Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, accused Beijing of undermining diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Microsoft spokesperson David Cuddy emphasized, “We’re working closely with the National Security Council and Department of Commerce, and U.S. national security will continue to be a principal priority.” This development highlights the intricate balance of advancing AI technology while addressing national security concerns.
